EOG Resources expects Q2 2026 results from unconventional wells in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain, a pivotal test of North American shale methods in Gulf geology
2 Jun 2026

EOG Resources expects initial well results this quarter from two unconventional partnerships in the Gulf, a milestone the company flagged during its Q4 2025 earnings call in February. The data, expected by end of Q2 2026, will offer the first substantive technical signal on whether North American shale methods translate to Arabian geology.
Both programs remain in active appraisal. Chief operating officer Jeffrey Leitzell confirmed that in Abu Dhabi, EOG operates Unconventional Onshore Block 3 alongside ADNOC in the Al Dhafra region, where horizontal wells have been drilled across a 900,000-acre oil-prone block and oil brought to surface. Separately, EOG and BapcoEnergies are jointly appraising Bahrain's deep pre-Unayzah tight gas formation, estimated to hold up to 35 trillion cubic feet of gas in place. Gas has already been confirmed at surface.
Neither program has been disrupted by regional tensions. A $6.5 billion capital commitment, confirmed in May 2026, underpins EOG's Gulf activity. Commercial terms will remain undisclosed until formal investment decisions are taken, a posture the company describes as the "Oman model" of disciplined transparency.
The broader stakes extend beyond EOG's own portfolio. Saudi Arabia's Jafurah basin has demonstrated that unconventional gas can reach commercial scale in the Gulf. Programs in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain now test the same thesis across distinct geological formations, with national oil company partners contributing in-country technical expertise on both sides.
For ADNOC and BapcoEnergies, a strong Q2 readout would accelerate commercial timelines. EOG's management has signalled openness to additional gas projects but set high return thresholds as the condition for new entry.
What the results will not settle is whether Gulf unconventional production is broadly repeatable, or whether Jafurah's performance reflects conditions specific to that basin. Q2 data will sharpen that question considerably.
